We’re pleased to have another great vintage of the Elerding Vineyard Cab.  Wine Spectator consistently scores this wine wine 90+ points.
This wine has aromas of cassis, blackberry, dark rose and forest floor and flavors of dark cherry, dark chocolate, espresso, and leather on the palate. It is a very nice balance of fruit and earth, exactly how we like to make our wine.

2014 Collusion

In the movie Sideways, the main character had a prized trophy bottle of 1961 Cheval Blanc which was a blend of Cab Franc and Merlot. We wanted to try our hand at a similar combination and after many enjoyable blending trials settled on a 50/50 blend of Cab Franc and Merlot for our debut of this new blend we call Collusion. The combination is so good it should be illegal! 150 cases

Winemaker’s Notes:

The Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a marriage of the 3 main growing regions from which we source Cab grapes: Echo (soon to be) AVA, Walla Walla AVA and Yakima AVA. This combination of Cab sources from 2014 proved to be a winner in our blending trials, bringing the best features of each region into this cuvee blend. With a little addition of Petit Verdot, we achieved a balanced, powerful example of what Columbia Valley Cabernets can offer. We expect this wine to continue to improve for at least 3-5 years in cellar and is expected to age well for 10+ years.

2014 Equilibrium Red Blend

Our Equilibrium blend is inspired by our favorite all-time wine made in our pre-commercial days. The blend features Malbec but is complemented by a significant 33% of Cabernet Sauvignon creating a unique and (we think) delicious blend. This wine is characterized by the bold, dark fruit of the Malbec and an earthiness and complexity contributed by the Cabernet Sauvignon. We expect this wine to continue to improve for at least 3-5 years in cellar and is expected to age well for 10+ years.

Malbec has been one of our core wines since we began the winery. It was once the most planted grape in Bordeaux and has gained more recent attention as the dominant grape grown in Argentina. More importantly, Washington’s Columbia Valley is one of the few places in the world capable of growing exceptional Malbec. Wines made from this grape are notorious for requiring extended aging before they are released or ready to drink. Ours IS ready to drink at release but will continue to improve for at least 3-5 years in cellar and is expected to age well for 10+ years.

We aged this wine in barrels for a full 30 months, more than 6 months longer than our average wine and 15-20 months longer than most wineries. This extended aging converts the Malbec grape from a simple, fruit forward wine into an exceptionally balanced complete wine.

Petit Verdot is one of the 5 primary Bordeaux varietals and its claim to fame is in blending. Single varietal wines and blends can be completely transformed by the addition of a small percent of Petit Verdot. It is common for wineries to add this to Cabernet, Merlot and other varietals to boost the color, earthy qualities and provide complexity. In our experience anything more than ~4% Petit Verdot has quite a significant and characteristic impact on the wine blend. Interestingly, by itself it doesn’t have overbearing qualities; rather, it has nice fruit qualities, lots of depth and a surprisingly balanced flavor with lots of tannin and structure. We thought it would be interesting to bottle some by itself to share with you as a unique standalone wine.

Syrah has been called a winemaker’s grape meaning the winemaker can have a strong influence on the style the wine becomes through winemaking techniques. We crafted our Syrah to be soft and approachable with big, luscious fruit and just enough acidity and tannins to balance the wine. It is dark and rich in color and flavors.

The grapes were sourced from Seven Hills Vineyard which is one the first commercial vineyards in Walla Walla, first planted in 1980. It has a relatively high elevation for the area producing fruit with bright fruit qualities and early ripening. Seven Hills has been described as one of the “Great Vineyards of the World” by wine industry publications and has become known for producing excellent Syrah grapes in recent years.

This is our first vintage working with Tempranillo grapes which were supplied by our friends
Lloyd and Lois Piercy at Echo West Vineyards.
The historic growing region for Tempranillo is Spain where it is known as “Tinto”, “Rioja” or
“Ribera del Duero”. There has been a lot of recent success planting this grape in the Pacific
Northwest too. Here, the grapes seem to produce a more fruit forward wine which is more
approachable at a younger age than the Spanish counterparts. This is a wine paired best with
foods and specifically with meats, full flavored and spicy foods which all help to bring out the
spectrum of flavors of the wine.
We chose to age the wine in 100% American barrels for a full 2 years to bulk up the structure
and tannins as is typical for this grape. Higher end tempranillo wines from Spain are often not
released until 5 years from harvest as this is a wine well suited for long aging.
